How do we make your Bespoke chopping board

attention to detail

We take great pride in every product that we make, this is reflected in the time that we take to make your Bespoke End-grain Board. Wood is a living, moving medium that expands and contracts with temperature and moisture levels. The pressure exerted by clamping and heat produced by some of the tools can all impact the wood so allowing time to rest and ‘relax’ between stages is critical for a long life of daily use.

It takes at least 36 steps to create your one of a kind end-grain board.

  1. Receive our responsibly sourced FSC Maple / Cherry / Walnut rough lumber boards

  2. Trim the lumber to manageable length boards

  3. First plaining and initial thicknessing of each board

  4. Square the edges of each board

  5. Cut the lumber into thinner strips based on the desired pattern

  6. Second planning and thicknessing of each strip

  7. Arrange the strips in preparation of gluing

  8. Double check the order aligns with the desired design then glue and clamp

  9. Remove from clamps and scrape the board when the glue has cured to remove excess

  10. Leave the combined long-grain board to rest after the pressure of clamping (this is now a simple board but the long-grain is not great for your knives)

  11. Rough grit sand to and even board thickness

  12. Cross-cut the board into strips

  13. Final thicknessing and squaring of the strips

  14. Rotate the strips 90 degrees to reveal the end-grain, arrange and rotate to create the final pattern

  15. Glue and clap

  16. Remove from clamps and scrape the board when the glue has cured to remove excess

  17. Repeat steps 3-16 based on the desired design (some designs need up to 5 rounds)

  18. Leave the board to rest after the pressure of clamping

  19. Rough grit sand the end-grain board for flatness and final thickness

  20. Square board and trim to final dimensions

  21. Hand sand with 80 grit sandpaper

  22. Round the edges of the board

  23. Hand sand with 120 grit sandpaper

  24. Wet board to raise the grain and allow to dry

  25. Hand sand with 180 grit sandpaper

  26. Wet board to raise the grain and allow to dry
