End-Grain Cutting Board
Frequently asked questions
What is the best chopping board?
End-grain chopping boards are, of course! They are more hygienic, longer-lasting, better for your knives, and look beautiful!
What does end-grain mean?
End-grain refers to the direction of the wood grain – this is very important when making a chopping board or butcher’s block. End-grain has many benefits over face-grain: it’s better for your knives, longer-lasting, self-healing, antibacterial, and beautiful!
Why are end-grain chopping boards better for your knives?
End-grain separates as the knife cuts down but springs back together as you lift the knife. This means that the sharp edge of your knife isn’t forced to cut anything other than your ingredients. This action has the added benefit of squeezing out any food particles, ensuring bacteria doesn’t become embedded in the board’s surface.
Edge-grain fibres (typically used for chopping boards, along with face-grain) run across the surface of the board, so every time you use it, you will be cutting the fibres of the board. This will dull your knife blade far more quickly and can embed food particles in the board’s surface.
What materials do you use for end-grain chopping boards?
All hard wood we use is natural, kiln-dried, contains no dyes or stains, and is locally and ethically sourced (we purchase only non-endangered species of trees). We use glue that is food-safe, as well as all-natural food-grade mineral oil and beeswax. With your purchased board, we also include instructions on how to give it the proper care it deserves, so it will last for years to come!
How long will it take to make and ship my end-grain chopping boards?
As all of our products are handmade, we need 2-3 weeks to craft and ship your board.
